Cardiac First Response

The Cardiac First Response (CFR) – Community Course is a short, practical training program that teaches participants how to respond quickly and effectively to sudden cardiac arrest, heart attack, choking, and stroke. This course is developed and certified by the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) and is ideal for members of the public, workplaces, community groups, and volunteers. It is an essential foundation in emergency care and forms part of the Irish Chain of Survival.

  • Introduction to PHECC and CFR Role
  • Adult, Child, and Infant CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
  • Safe AED Use
  • Management of Choking (Adult/Child/Infant)
  • Recognising Heart Attack and Stroke
  • Recovery Position and Post-Resuscitation Care
  • Infection Control and Scene Safety
  • Calling Emergency Services and Providing a Handover


🧠 Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise the signs of cardiac arrest, heart attack, stroke, and choking
  • Perform high-quality CPR on adults, children, and infants
  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) safely and effectively
  • Place a casualty in the recovery position
  • Respond appropriately to an adult or child who is choking
  • Activate and communicate effectively with emergency medical services (EMS)
  • Understand their role in the Chain of Survival

📅 Duration

  • 4 hours (half-day course)
  • Practical, hands-on training with live instructor
  • In-person delivery is required for certification (per PHECC standards)

🎓 Certification

  • Participants will receive a PHECC-accredited CFR Community Certificate
  • Certificate is valid for 2 years
  • Meets the national standard for basic life support training in Ireland
  • Recognised by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and relevant Irish workplaces
