This course provides essential training for anyone responsible for children, students, or service users at risk of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis). Participants will learn to recognise the signs of anaphylaxis, respond calmly and effectively, and safely administer epinephrine using auto-injectors (e.g. EpiPen®, Jext®, Emerade®). Aligned with HSE, Department of Education Circular 0033/2015, Tusla, and HIQA guidelines, this course is suitable for schools, early years settings, youth services, and residential care.

📋 Course Content

  • Understanding Allergies and Anaphylaxis

  • Common Triggers (Food, Insect Stings, Latex, Medication)

  • Symptoms of Mild Allergy vs Severe Anaphylaxis

  • Introduction to Epinephrine Auto-Injectors:

    • EpiPen®, Jext®, Emerade® (using training devices)

    • Dosing, timing, and common errors

  • Administration Protocol (Step-by-step)

  • Emergency Action Plans:

    • Positioning, calling 112 / 999, second dose guidance

  • Storage, Expiry Checks, and Documentation

  • Parental Communication and Post-Incident Review

  • Legal Considerations:

    • School policies, written consents, and care plans

    • Staff roles and responsibilities under Circular 0033/2015


🧠 Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of mild to severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis

  • Differentiate between food allergies, insect stings, drug reactions, and idiopathic causes

  • Administer epinephrine using an auto-injector correctly and confidently

  • Respond to emergencies using an Anaphylaxis Action Plan

  • Position and monitor a casualty until emergency services arrive

  • Communicate effectively with family, emergency responders, and healthcare providers

  • Maintain appropriate records and follow up post-incident

  • 2.5 to 3 hours

  • Available in-person (preferred for hands-on device use) or online (Zoom, with trainer demonstration)

  • Optional add-on: Combined Asthma & Allergy Emergency Response (4-hour bundle)

🎓 Certification

  • Participants receive a Safeguard Training Certificate of Competence – Anaphylaxis & Epinephrine Administration

  • Certificate is valid for 2 years

  • Fulfils training requirements under:

    • Department of Education Circular 0033/2015

    • Tusla Early Years Regulations 2016

    • HIQA Guidelines for Designated Centres

    • HSE Epinephrine & Allergy Management Frameworks
